The power of hair - Why Kundalini Yogis let their hair grow

When you read old yogic scriptures and look at images of Yogis from India you often see long hair tied up on the head into a big knot. Is that a coincidence? Was it a trend at that time like we now have hipsters with long hair and beards? No, there is a whole science behind it!
The knot that Yogi’s wear on top of their head is called a “Rishi knot”. This is where the crown chakra (Saharara) is located, it’s an essential energy point in the body. Tying your hair up like this has a direct energetic effect. It stimulates the downward flow of energy along the spine and this in return automatically stimulates the upward flow of Kundalini energy that is located at the bottom of the spine (Muladhara chakra). This increased flow of Kundalini energy (Creative life force) gives you more vitality and strengthens your intuition.
The importance of hair
Many ancient yogis let their hair grow because they believed that hair functions like antennas that conduct life force energy, prana, to the frontal lobe of the brain, the part of the brain we use in meditation and visualization. The length of the hair plays a role, the longer it grows, the stronger the effect. Apparently it takes around three years to reform these subtle antennas around the hair tips after cutting them off. Makes you think… A lot of people feel a bit off after cutting their hair, it takes a couple of days to get used to it again, like something changed in your body, have you ever noticed this?
More energy, stamina and patience
When we do not cut our hair it will grow to a specific length that is different for everybody, at some point it stops growing. Hair is made out of protein and when you cut it off the body constantly needs to provide protein to the growing of your hair, which otherwise could be used for other important health functions. On top of that, when our hair is allowed to grow into its full length, phosphor, calcium and vitamin D are being produced and transmitted into the glandular system and eventually into the spinal fluid ending up in the brain. This ionic changes result in a better memory, more energy, stamina and patience.
Taking care of your hair
So taking good care of your hair is not only important from a cosmetic point of view, your hair plays an important part in how you feel, since it has such an influence in your energetic metabolism. To prevent split ends, so you do not need to cut your hair, use a natural oil to keep it healthy. It’s also wonderful to massage your scalp with some oil before washing it. At night comb your hair down, preferably with a wooden comb, this will help you to relax. And if you want to help your hair growing into it’s full length, the best is to braid it, this will prevent damage during your sleep.
Feeling down? Comb it up 🙂
When you feel down, combing your hair with a wooden comb will give instant relief, especially if you comb it up and tie it in a knot, just try and feel the energetic shift it gives you. It will help you to focus and feel more present and stable. Another good tip is to wash your hair when you feel a bit weary, this will give you more clarity.
