The Story of Wisdom Moon
A famous story about Tara’s origin can be found in a book by the seventeenth-century historian Taranatha who shares the tale of Princess Wisdom Moon who lived in a mysterious realm called “Multicolored Light”.
The Origin of Green Tara
In a time before time, the young princess Wisdom Moon, devoted herself completely to Drum Sound, who was the Buddha of this age and place. Her boundless offerings and devotion to his teachings opened her heart to bodhicitta, the deepest inner motivation to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.
Some monks, surprised by her accomplishments, questioned how she could progress on the path of awakening as a woman. They suggested she transform into a man or pray to be reborn as one in her next life, believing that only then could she attain enlightenment.
Wisdom Moon, wise beyond her years, reminded them that ultimate reality transcends distinctions like self or other, male or female. With courage and clarity, she vowed, “I will achieve enlightenment only in a female form. As a woman, I will also work continuously to free sentient beings from suffering.”
The Legacy of Green Tara
With her heartfelt vow, Wisdom Moon illuminated the monks’ ignorance of the Buddhist teachings. Throughout the ages she continued to teach and liberate millions of beings, eventually becoming a Buddha herself. Known as the Mother of all Buddhas, Tara’s legacy is still known and alive today.
