Switching Gears: Mastering the Nervous System with Kundalini Yoga

From ON to OFF
Technically yoga helps you to switch from the activated state (sympathetic) to the relaxed (parasympathetic) state. Many forms of yoga mainly focus on this switch, from 'on' to 'off' so to speak. Kundalini Yoga trains the nervous system to actually make a fast and smooth switch between these two. You train yourself to be 'on' when necessary and you can more easily turn yourself 'off' when it’s time to relax.

What’s up with all those challenging postures?
In Kundalini Yoga there are quite a few challenging exercises that may even irritate you. This is with a purpose. Difficult or irritating postures are a way of provoking and stimulating the sympathetic nervous system (the gas pedal).

After each of these exercises there is a small rest so the sympathetic nervous system can relax, the parasympathetic nervous system (the brake) gets stimulated and you get to observe the mind, the breath, your reactions, before you start the next exercise. In this way you train and tone both systems and you can become a responsive, not reactive, yogi.
