Jamu: the Indonesian health drink

Jamu is a drink typical of traditional Indonesian medicine prepared from turmeric and other naturally sourced ingredients. We discovered it during our Bali trip, since it’s very popular on this island. This drink is said to prevent infectious diseases,  detoxify the liver, fight bacteria, reduce inflammation & boost your immunity. A perfect drink during your Spring detox!

 

Health benefits

  • Turmeric: It is one of the most healing roots as it helps prevent and relieve inflammations, detoxifies the body, stimulates metabolism and aids with digestion.
  • Ginger: It is known to speed up metabolism, prevent nausea, be anti-inflammatory, digestive and promote circulation. Ginger increases your energy and vitality!
  • Lime: boosts the immune system and prevents disease because of its antiviral, antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.
  • Honey (for sweetening): when used raw it is a natural antiseptic.
  • Black pepper: improves nutrient absorption & enhances digestion

 

Ingredients

Here’s are the ingredients for 1 liter of Jamu. Try to get the ingredients organic if possible to increase their health benefits:

  • 1 liter water
  • 100g fresh turmeric root, peeled & chopped
  • 50g fresh ginger peeled & chopped
  • Juice of 3 limes
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 pinch black pepper

 

How to easily make Jamu yourself:

  1. Add the pieces of turmeric and ginger together with the liter of water in a blender or (slow) juicer until smooth.
  2. Put the mixture in a saucepan and let it simmer for 20 minutes until creamy. Then add the lime juice and honey + grind in some quality black pepper.
  3. Either drink it warm from your thermos throughout the day or drink room temperature.You can keep your Jamu in airtight glass bottles up until a week when stored in the fridge. ENJOY!
