Mantra for calming the mind - Pavamana Mantra

This mantra is an opening prayer from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad estimated to have been composed around 700 years BC. This ancient text speaks about the Atman which translates as Soul or Self. The three lines or statements are referred to as Pavamana mantras that one can recite to dedicate oneself to the realisation of the Self and Truth.

Om Asato Ma Sadgamay

Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya

Mrtyor Ma Amrtam Gamaya

Translation

Lead me from the unreal to the real

Lead me from darkness to light

Lead me from death to immortality

Depending on what works for you, you can chant with the intention of speaking to your higher self, your teacher or to the Divine. It's your Sankalpa, your sincere intention that matters. Chanting this mantra as a meditation will help to calm the mind and clear the clouds of misperception that are affecting our experience of reality. Dedicated practice leads towards the realization of the undying True Self, that which is not bound to our physical body and mind. As such the mantra helps us to transcend the limited sense of Self, opening our hearts to empathy and compassion so we can all actively contribute to the wellbeing of all sentient beings and the planet.
